Quando si scoprono per la prima volta le immagini di Alain Laboile, spuntano una quantità di riferimenti, eppure esse non assomigliano a nessun altro. È senza dubbio questo strano paradosso che definisce il meglio della fotografia: c’è qualcosa in lui di Sally Mann o di Danny Lyon, anche se queste foto non appartengono che a lui e resistono a ogni forzatura di attribuirgli una qualsiasi affiliazione. È infatti questa porosità tra fotografia amatoriale e fotografia professionale che fa emergere questa scrittura fotografica che non assomiglia a nulla. È grazie a questa estraneità che il lavoro di Alain Laboile seduce e affascina. Ci tocca nel cuore e nello spirito, perché gioca su molti campi della nostra percezione del mondo, di un mondo idealizzato, di un paradiso perduto, quello della spensieratezza dell’infanzia.

When one first discovers Alain Laboile’s images, a wealth of references pop up, yet they resemble no one else. It is undoubtedly this strange paradox that defines the best of photography: there is something in him of Sally Mann or Danny Lyon, even though these photos belong only to him and resist any forcing to attribute any affiliation to him. Indeed, it is this porosity between amateur and professional photography that brings out this photographic writing that resembles nothing. It is because of this foreignness that Alain Laboile’s work seduces and fascinates. It touches us in the heart and spirit because it plays on many areas of our perception of the world, of an idealized world, of a lost paradise, that of the carefreeness of childhood.
